The cottages were initially designed to hide the tunnel at the rear which was for stock going between the quarry and the station. They also gradually bring the ground down level down from the hilltop to track level. Several cottage designs were tried based on a booklet titled "Welsh Industrial Workers Housing 1775-1875", which included photos, plans and elevations. Paper elevations of the chosen design were propped in place and the terrace came to life.
5mm foamboard formed the base of all the buildings, with 3D printed doors and windows, thin card slates (as the station building), brick sheet chimneys, 'umbrella-spine' gutters and wire downpipes. The ridge tiles were 3D printed based on a design in Stephens road. (Note an early design of the factory).
The TV aerials are made from silver steel wire and are soldered onto a flat steel plate. These snap onto magnets built into the chimney stacks which allows them to be stored in a separate box. We were advised that the earliest X frame could only receive the BBC whereas the later H designs were able to receive BBC & ITV and are fitted to the neatest cottages!
The brick buildings at the bottom are possibly the Edwards mangers house and offices.
